FAQ

On this page we try to answer some the questions frequently asked by riders and parents new to CMGA and mounted games.

QUESTION:

Is CMGA affiliated with Pony Club, and are the games and rules the same as Prince Philip Games?

ANSWER:

No, CMGA is governed by the International Mounted Games Association (IMGA), and though many Pony Club riders compete in CMGA events, we are not affiliated. Mounted games descriptions and rules can be found in the IMGA Official Rule Book which can be viewed and downloaded from www.mounted-games.org

QUESTION:

Are there any age restrictions for riders in mounted games?

ANSWER:

No, IMGA games are open to riders of all ages.

QUESTION:

I am a beginner / advanced rider. What does CMGA have to offer for me?

ANSWER:

CMGA offers demos, clinics and competitions for all levels of riders.  Everything from local fun competitions for those just learning, to international team competitions for high level riders. Tryouts for the international teams are open to all CMGA members. CMGA also works hard to develop the sport of mounted games in other countries. This past January five CMGA riders traveled to Botswana to participate in a coaching clinic and to compete in the first Africa Nations Cup competition.

QUESTION:

Aren't ponies too small for older kids and adults?

ANSWER:

The IMGA allows "ponies" up to 15'1"  It's all a matter of achieving a safe and workable balance between size and weight of "pony" and rider. Keep in mind that the average cutting horse is under 15 hands, and often ridden by large cowboys!

QUESTION:

What tack and equipment do I need for mounted games?

ANSWER:

Mounted games are performed with english tack. Only snaffle bits are allowed. Whips and spurs are not permitted. Riders should wear breeches and paddock boots - no chaps as they restrict movement. And of course, an approved helmet is mandatory. Practice props are easy and inexpensive to make. You can find specifications for games equipment in the IMGA rule book.

QUESTION:

I show my pony in hunter/jumper shows. Wouldn't doing games with him damage his training, and mine?

ANSWER:

This depends on your pony.  Many hunter/jumper ponies, and riders, have benefited from the cross training opportunities that games provide. Ponies and riders alike become more agile and confident, and both enjoy the variety and change of pace. If nothing else, practicing a few basic games skills would be a fun and beneficial way to add a little fun to your regular program.
